Scholarships for California Women

California State Chapter P.E.O. has four Scholarship Fund groups that administer more than 50 individual scholarships. One application form submittal encompasses any combination of the four scholarship fund groups listed on this page. Each fund group and many of the individual scholarships have specific eligibility requirements and restrictions.

Apply for California State Scholarships

California State P.E.O. Scholarship Application forms will be available beginning September 1, 2025, through January 15, 2026 for the 2026-2027 academic year. Completed packets, including all required attachments, must be submitted no later than January 15, 2026

Dorothy L. Weller Scholarship Fund Group

Selecting the Dorothy L Weller box on the Scholarship Application form automatically submits your application to this scholarship. This scholarship is administered by a single committee.

For resident California women 

Law

Undergraduate/Graduate

 

Completion of high school or equivalent credits.  California resident woman who has applied to, been accepted to, or is currently pursuing a course of study in the field of law at an accredited college, university, or licensed paralegal school.

Excellence in character, integrity, scholastic ability, school / community activities, and financial need.

Award Amount and number of awards varies annually.

Ethel O. Gardner Scholarship Fund Group

Selecting the Ethel O. Gardner box on the Scholarship Application form automatically submits your application to three scholarships, all administered by the Ethel O. Gardner committee.

  • Ethel O. Gardner: upper division and graduate students in any field of study including professional schools
  • Janet Griswold: Undergraduates in any field of study
  • Dorothy Halleck: Upper division and graduate students in the field of Education who are permanent residents of Santa Barbara County, or counties south of Santa Barbara

For resident California women 

  • Ethel O. Gardner: Unspecified
  • Janet Griswold: Unspecified
  • Dorothy Halleck: Education
  • Ethel O. Gardner: Upper Division/Graduate
  • Janet Griswold: Undergraduate
  • Dorothy Halleck: Upper Division/Graduate

California resident woman. Must be attending an accredited college or university.

  • Ethel O. Gardner: Must have 2 years college.
  • Dorothy Halleck: Santa Barbara County southwarda

Outstanding scholastic, character and activities record and a financial need.

Ruth G. White Scholarship Fund Group

Selecting the Ruth G. White box on the Scholarship Application form automatically submits your application to two scholarships, both administered by the Ruth G. White committee.

  • Ruth G. White: For women who have completed one year of graduate study in the broad field of medicine
  • Dorothy C. Wisner: For women currently in college studying in the broad field of medicine.
 

For resident California women studying in the broad field of medicine. 

Medicine

  • Ruth G. White: Graduate
  • Dorothy C. Wisner: Undergraduate

 

California resident woman. 

  • Ruth G. White: Has completed her first year of graduate study in the field of medicine
  • Dorothy C. Wisner: High school graduate, currently enrolled in the United States in an undergraduate broad field of medicine.

Integrity of character, scholastic ability, school / community activities and financial need.

Award Amount and number of awards varies annually.

Scholarship Selection Committee Group

Selecting the Scholarship Selection Committee – P.E.O. Foundation Scholarships box on the Scholarship Application form automatically submits your application to 46+ scholarships. These scholarships are administered by the Scholarship Selection committee. The SSC Flyer below explains in more detail. 

Awards group of 46+ scholarships for resident California women​, each of which may include specific requirements such as field of study, type of post-secondary institution to be attended and geographic residency.  An applicant will be considered for all scholarships for which she may be eligible.

Varies by individual scholarship

Undergraduate / Upper Division / Graduate

California resident woman (must have permanent California residency status) who is, or will be at the time of scholarship funding next Fall, a high school graduate (or equivalent) and will be enrolled in a post-secondary school in the U.S. or Canada.

Integrity of character, scholastic ability, school / community activities and financial need.

Award Amount and number of awards varies annually.
